The Mineta San Jose International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States. It is located in metropolitan San Jose, California and serves both San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The airport was opened on November 18, 1939, and was originally named San Jose Municipal Airport. The name was changed to Mineta San Jose International Airport in honor of Rodolpho Mineta, who served as secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush. The airport covers an area of 1,000 acres (400 ha) and has three runways: 8/26 with an asphalt surface measuring 10,002 by 150 feet (3,050 x 46 m), 12/30 with a clay surface measuring 7,385 by 150 feet (2,210 x 46 m), and 18/36 with a concrete surface measuring 6,969 by 150 feet (2,122 x 46 m). In total, the airport has 27 gates and can handle more than 500 aircraft at any given time. There are also six concourses spread out over the airport grounds.
